Thanks for joining us on our journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Alaska. This 6-part series features our Alaska cruise showcasing the beauty, excitement, and unique experiences from each port of call. From our last port in Ketchikan, we spend our last day of the cruise gliding through the waterways of the Inside Passage on our way to Vancouver, British Columbia.
Day 7: Inside Passage
We left Ketchikan port late in the afternoon under grey skies and a light drizzle. Despite the weather, the waters were smooth, making for a gentle departure. The mood was serene as we sailed away, the rain adding a touch of mystique to the landscape.
The next day we welcomed the sunny day and warmer temperatures. The clear skies provided perfect visibility for taking in the surrounding beauty. The change in weather was a pleasant surprise, offering a perfect day for cruising.
The Inside Passage is a coastal route for ships and boats that weaves through the islands of the Pacific Northwest, running from Puget Sound in Washington State, through British Columbia in Canada, and into Alaska. This scenic waterway is renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and abundant wildlife. It has been a crucial route for indigenous peoples for thousands of years and continues to be a popular path for modern explorers.
As we sailed, we spotted a small boat whale watching. While we only caught the literal tail-end of the whale on this video, the sighting was a reminder of the rich marine life that inhabits these waters. Knowing they were nearby added excitement to our journey.
After lunch, we spent time walking around the ship, eager to catch views from either side of the islands surrounding us. The landscapes were ever-changing, each side offering its own unique perspective.
The Inside Passage is famous for its impressive rock formations and towering mountains. These natural structures are primarily composed of granite and other ancient rocks that have been shaped by millions of years of geological activity. The mountains rise majestically from the sea, creating a dramatic backdrop for our voyage.
We were surrounded by endless glorious greenspace. The lush forests are home to a variety of plant and tree species, including Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and red cedar. These trees create a dense canopy, providing habitats for countless wildlife species and adding to the region's breathtaking beauty.
Cruising the Inside Passage is a journey through one of the most beautiful and serene parts of the world. The combination of smooth waters, stunning rock formations, towering mountains, and endless green forests creates a memorable experience. Each moment offers a new view, a new story, and a new connection to this incredible region. Our adventure continues, and we can't wait to see what lies ahead.
