Beginnings, Transitions, Endings, and Janus

Updated: Jun 26

And just like that, another January is behind us.

We’ve moved on from the holiday festivities and eased into a new year. By this time we can readily admit to ourselves that we are either on schedule and on top of things or spectacularly flailing. We’re kind of in between.

For the first half of the month, we moved with a tentative stance, quick to fall back on the still sharp recall of a holiday break. Work, schedules, and pretty much most days are a blur at the beginning of January. We love the holiday hangover. It’s like an automatic grace period we give each other to settle in. And then slowly yet like clockwork, we get back into our routines and schedules.

The month of January is named for Janus. Ancient Roman religion identifies Janus as the animistic spirit of doorways and archways. According to scholars, the beginning of the day, month, and year were sacred to him. He was known as the god of all beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, and ending.

As we end the month, we find ourselves in that transition, too. Moving forward carrying with us the unfinished business of previous years, while along the way picking up what will be pieces of our story in 2023. And among those pieces are some of the most mundane activities that we do out of habit, mixed in with a good dose of new stuff, people, and experiences.

While we’re not sure what’s behind some of the doors we’re going to choose or where passages we walk along will lead us, we’re in good shape as long as we have some of our favorite creature comforts: good reads, good eats, good beats, good movies, soulful adventures, and good company.
