Château Views & Island Hues: A Maritime Journey's Prelude in Quebec (Part II)

Updated: Oct 17

As our journey through Canada's Maritimes unfolded, Quebec City served as our captivating staring point blending old-world charm and modern vibrancy. From the moment we set foot in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Old Town, we were transported to a world where centuries-old architecture and cobblestone streets spoke of tales of a rich past.

Our feet carried us along Rue du Petit-Champlain, often hailed as North America's oldest commercial street. The quaint boutiques and cafes that line this picturesque alley seemed to hold secrets from another era, inviting us to explore further. And explore we did, our curiosity leading us to the majestic Fairmont Le Château Frontenac.

This grand hotel, perched atop a hill overlooking the St. Lawrence River, is more than just a place to rest one's head. We discovered a wing dedicated to art displays and images showcasing the visionaries who built and popularized this architectural marvel. As we wandered through the exhibits, we gained a deeper appreciation for the pivotal role this château has played in Quebec City's story for over a century.

But history wasn't the only thing on our minds – our taste buds were calling, and Quebec City answered with a resounding "poutine!" We made it our delicious mission to try as many variations of this iconic dish as possible. From the classic combination of fries, gravy, and squeaky cheese curds to gourmet versions topped with Bolognese sauce or lobster, each bite was a celebration of Quebec's culinary heritage.

The next day we headed to Île d'Orléans, a food lover's paradise just a stone's throw from Quebec City. Driving around this fertile island was like embarking on a gourmet treasure hunt. We visited the Laval Gagnon produce market, where we tasted delicious, fresh, and locally grown fruits and vegetables. The vibrant colors and enticing aromas of seasonal produce had us filling our bags with nature's bounty.

Next, we discovered Domaine Steinbach, a charming vineyard and cider house. Here, we sampled a variety of wines and ciders, each sip a testament to the island's ideal growing conditions and the vintner's expertise. The setting was as delightful as the drinks, with picturesque views of the surrounding countryside and the river bank.

A highlight of our Île d'Orléans visit was Cassis Monna & Filles. This family-run business captivated us with their exquisite black currant wines and other gourmet products. As we tasted their offerings, from sweet liqueurs to tangy preserves, we found ourselves questioning why we hadn't discovered this place sooner.

Each stop on Île d'Orléans revealed new local delicacies and artisanal crafts, making us appreciate the rich agricultural heritage and culinary innovation of the region. The island seemed to encapsulate the essence of Quebec's farm-to-table culture, and we left with our own haul of local specialties and produce.

Recharged and ready for more, we set out on a day trip to the picturesque Charlevoix region. The journey took us to Azulée lavande farm in Baie-Saint-Paul, where fields of purple stretched to the horizon, filling the air with a soothing fragrance. We strolled down Bridge Street, exploring the small-town charm and browsing artisanal shops that seemed to capture the essence of the region, capping the day off at the Le Saint-Pub-Microbrasserie in downtown.

After days of culinary adventures and historical explorations, our tired feet were crying out for some TLC. We found the perfect remedy at Strøm Nordic Spa, a haven of tranquility just outside the city. Soaking in thermal baths and sweating it out in saunas, all while gazing at stunning views of the St. Lawrence River, we felt our energy renewed for the adventures still to come.

As the sun set on our time in Quebec City, we couldn't help but feel a mix of contentment and anticipation. With our appetites whetted – both literally and figuratively – we set our sights on the next destination. The road ahead promised more hidden gems along Canada's eastern shores, and we were eager to uncover them all. Quebec City had been the perfect starting point for our maritime adventure, setting a high bar for the journey to come. As we packed our bags, filled with souvenirs and memories, we couldn't help but wonder: what delightful surprises await us next?
